So . . . Is there a best microphone for recording audiobooks?

A short post this busy post-launch week.

We get a lot of performers who update us on new gear acquisitions. The big picture is great for us: We now know that Z performer has the equipment necessary to record from his or her home studio. Perfect. And I get it: The best way to convey that message is by listing the gear, of which a microphone is a key component. All good. Keep the notes coming!

But let’s be clear: Just because you have X mic doesn’t mean that it’s the best microphone for recording audiobooks or the best for you. U87s and C12s are expensive, classic mics. If they’re well-maintained and used with other decent gear, they will sound wonderful. For some voices. TLM103s? Less pricey but same thing.

When it comes to recording audiobooks, microphones are not one-size-fits all

You have to try different mics to find the one that sounds best with your instrument in your studio. Wide-diaphragm condenser mic? Dynamic mic? Shotgun? Ribbon? They all work for different people with different kinds of voices in different settings. There’s no single solution.

Think of it this way. Romanee Conti. Great wine. Lousy and insanely expensive accompaniment to a fiery vindaloo. Ball-peen hammer. Useful tool but not so good for framing or cabinetry. (Fire that carpenter!)

How to pick the right microphone for your audiobook

It’s all about the particular application. You need to try different mics in your studio. Record samples with each of them. Get feedback from a trusted engineer on which suits you best. Don’t equate expensive mics with the right ones for you. It requires some work, but it’ll pay off.
