The Perils of Producer X by Eljinproductions.com

I’m a big proponent of empathy in business. I like to understand what people go through to perform their jobs.

Here’s an afternoon in the life of a producer doing audiobook casting. Producer X has ten programs to cast, and there’s lotsa stuff to contend with:

  • X has had to read and think about each of these books. Some are more challenging than others, some more compelling, some more difficult to cast.

  • The projects have talent budgets that vary.

  • Some of the titles are “drop-ins”— late additions that X must get out the door fast.

  • X has strong intuitions about the narrator marketplace but relies on different resources (including recommendations from colleagues) to gather solid candidates for each program.

  • These candidates better be solid; the authors or their agents will have to select the narrator from the producer’s list or approve X’s recommendation of a particular performer.

  • Some authors and agents will be easier to deal with than others.

  • Oh, and X’s boss is really anxious that a high-profile author be especially delighted with the audio production process.

  • A final point: X is tired and a little hangry, since X didn’t get out to lunch.

Audiobook Producers and The Casting Process: What Drives Their Decisions?

Audiobook producer X faces constraints on all sides. Some are more-or-less fixed, like scheduling and budget. But others are variable and changeable: knowledge of the field, taste, response to the pressures of office and professional politics, even mood brought on by hunger and fatigue.

In short: When it comes to audiobook casting, there’s a whole lot of information to collect and process—and frankly, a whole lot of noise to tune out! And the conditions under which this happens are complex and pressure-filled.

The questions: How do we help to make audiobook casting less noisy—and simply less difficult—for our producer? We’ve upped the game to casting in the casting vs. choosing conundrum. How do we help X win?

Well, maybe we get X up-and-running with a talent marketplace app for audiobook casting.
